Õk az 1956-os Magyar Forradalomban az önrendelkezés jogáért és a nemzeti függetlenségért küzdöttek. Hazafiak ezrei haltak meg a diktatúra elleni harcban, de szülõföldjüket nem tudták felszabadítani. Ezek a mártírok csak 200,000 honfitársukat tudták szabaddá tenni, akik nyugatra menekültek. Ezt az emlékmûvet az elesett hõsök emlékére emelték a hálás túlélõk, ma már kanadai állampolgárok.

Géza Benkõ with other members of the Hungarian Society of Victoria (Emil Izik - the Society's president of the time, and Joseph Paunoch - the creator of the monument) were instrumental in planning and erecting the memorial in 1986. Their original plans were to have the memorial placed in Victoria, but the City Council objected to the wording on the planned memorial. The Society refused to change the wording and after the disagreement with the Victoria City Council turned to the Saanich Council, who agreed to accept the memorial in their municipality. On the 26th of October 1986 Saanich Mayor Mel Couvelier and the 1956 Memorial Committee's chairman Géza Benkõ unveiled the Memorial.

You can find the Memorial, close to the Saanich Municipal Hall at 770 Vernon Avenue, on the landscaped area, next to the Police and Fire Hall buildings.

Az emlékmû tervezésében és 1986. évi felállításában, a Victoriai Magyar Társaskör sok más tagjával együtt (mint Izik Emil - akkori elnök és Paunoch József, az emlékmû készítõje) Benkõ Gézának volt jelentõs szerepe. Eredeti terveik alapján az 56-os emlékmû Victoriában lett volna emelve, de a városi tanács kifogásolta a tervezett emléktábla szövegét. Mivel a Társaskör nem egyezett bele a változtatásba, a monumentum végül is Victoria közigazgatási területén kívül, a saanichi önkormányzat alá esõ helyhatóságban került elhelyezésre.

Az emlékmû leleplezése 1986. október 26-án történt, Saanich polgármesterének, Mel Couveliernek és az 1956-os Emlékmû Bizottság elnökének, Benkõ Gézának a vezetésével.

Az 56-os magyar emlékmû az északról Victoriába vezetõ forgalmas autópálya mentén, közel a város közigazgatási határához, (csaknem Victoria kapujában), a  saanichi városházánál (Vernon Avenue 770), a rendõrségi és tûzoltósági épületek melletti parkosított területen található.
