Michael
B. Gergely (1914-1998)
|
 An
internationally known artist, born in Hungary,
studied arts for six years at the Royal
Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. Upon
graduating with a Masters degree, he became
assistant professor in the water colour
department of his noted Academy. He was awarded
several gold medals by the Royal Hungarian
Academy of Fine Arts for his water colour
studies and a one year scholarship from the
Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.
He immigrated to Canada in 1949 and during his
49 years in Canada he had several exhibitions in
Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Nanaimo and
also in Carmel, California. Gergely lived and
painted in Nanaimo for 27 years. His paintings
can be found in various private collections
around the world including Nassau, Montreal, New
York, Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo. In his
will he left a number of paintings to the
Nanaimo Hungarian Cultural Society of which he
was an active member. The Nanaimo Hungarian
Cultural Society is selling 16 of the Gergely
paintings, 13 watercolours and three
oil-on-canvases. |
