PRESIDENT'S REPORT

I was chosen president by the executive for this year. I believe most members know me but I would like to write a few short words for those members who do not.

I left Budapest after the ill fated revolution at the end of November 1956 at the age of sixteen. After spending six months in Austria and England I arrived in Victoria in May 1957 and have lived here with short interruptions ever since. Together with my uncle George Farkas Sr. and my cousin George Farkas Jr. I started a construction company in 1960. After George Senior's retirement George Junior and I have carried on the business together.

I have been an active member of the Hungarian Society ever since its inception in 1966. I was elected to the executive twice before and held the position of Vice President in 1981 and 1985, and last year. If I remember correctly!
I want to mention here that after many failed attempts over the years we finally have a beautiful, functional Cultural Centre which is under utilized. I will ry to bring this up at the next executive meeting and see if we can organize more social events. Perhaps open the doors every week for one or two afternoons, when members and their guests could socialize, play cards etc. We'll keep you informed, and would welcome suggestions about this.

As you all know, the FolkFest is defunct. This was our major fundraising function. Last year we worked very hard and managed to make enough money to cover all expenses and have some left over. I and the executive will work hard again to organize and lead the fundraising and other activities in the coming year. We will need the help of all the members who can spare the time to make our fundraising activities successful again this year.

Miklós Farkas
